Happy Earth Day, everyone! Earth Day feels especially important for those who want to incorporate more natural products into their lives, as natural cosmetics don’t only benefit our health, they benefit our planet.

To celebrate Earth Day, we are doing a few things:

revolution-organics-freedom-lip-gloss-truth

1. Giving away SEVEN, (7), yes, seven! LIPGLOSSES (details below)

2. Telling you about some great Earth Day deals (also below)

3. Announcing the winner of our Nourish Body Butter giveaway: Tonya! Congrats, Tonya! Please email us at productjunkiesrehab@gmail.com so we can mail you your prize! We are certain you will love it.

Back to the title of this post: Lipgloss is indeed the “gateway product” for many people trying to go green in their beauty routine. It’s the first thing that Jordan and I tried when we began this chemical-free, organic journey. It started  years and years ago, when I read something about how women eat an enormous amount of lipstick in a lifetime. So when I saw a new gloss containing “vitamins,” I bought it for Jordan. Soon we realized that it wasn’t just about an opportunity to consume an admittedly tiny amount of extra vitamins; here was a chance to eliminate toxins, parabens, and, especially lead, from the makeup product we “eat” the most of. Of course, we know now that all make up and beauty products are absorbed through your skin as if you were eating them, but we started small. And here we are, 4 Earth Days later, giving away 7 fantastic lip glosses FOR FREE!

Splurge on Yourself in the New Year: Splurge Skincare Review PLUS a Giveaway!

Posted by:  Jordan

Splurge Skincare logo

Happy 2013, friends!!  I can’t think of a better way to ring in the new year than by introducing a favorite new natural skincare line.  Wait, yes I can–a GIVEAWAY!!!!  But first, let me gush about these crazy good products.

Splurge was started in 2010 by two friends in Massachusetts who began making their awesome scrubs for their friends for Christmas gifts.  They were so loved that the hobby turned into a business which now sells three incredible products: the scrubs, lip balms, and their new tinted lip balms.

Splurge Skincare The Rub The scrubs currently come in 4 scents: almond, peppermint, lemon, and Autumn.  Winter will be released soon and if it smells as heavenly as the other four scents, I know it will be a hit.  My personal favorite is the Autumn, which is spicy, sweet (but not too sweet), and warming on your skin.  It has essential oils of orange, clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg and I assure you it’s a delightful treat year-round!  Emily’s favorite scent is lemon…or peppermint (it’s too hard to decide!).  These scrubs are really a special treat–a splurge, I suppose at $26 each, but such a worthwhile splurge.  Emily and I agree that they are quite possibly the best body scrubs we’ve ever tried.  If ever there were a time to splurge on a quality gift for yourself, the new year is it.

Splurge Lip Buttah The next product is not a splurge, it’s a necessity.  The Lip Buttahs are hands down the BEST, most moisturizing lip balms we’ve ever tried (and we’ve tried a lot!).  The balms are $7 each and I think I would pay more because they’re that incredible.  They are available in four scents as well: Peppermint, Almond, Lemon, and Orange Chocolate.  It doesn’t matter which scent you choose, they’re all equally soothing on your dry, winter lips.  I also appreciate the shape of the tubes which are oval rather than round, which I think covers more surface area of our lips, so you only need one swipe on each lip.  Emily and I seriously can’t get enough of these superb balms.

Splurge Tinted Lip ButtahNow, on to the fun news–the giveaway!!!  Splurge just recently launched their new tinted Lip Buttahs and we get to give away a set to one lucky reader.  The tinted balms are just as moisturizing as the traditional Lip Buttahs, but with just a slight hint of color (so don’t be afraid if you’re applying it without a mirror–you won’t look like a clown if you go out of the lines!).  The colors are available in three sheer shades: In Love (a soft pink), Fling (a sheer red), and Going Steady (an earthy nude).  Want to try out these incredible lip balms for yourself?  All you have to do is leave a comment below!  For bonus entries, “like” Splurge’s Facebook page and/or follow their Twitter feed (just tell us in the comments what you did and we’ll add those entries for you).  The contest will end a week from today on Tuesday, 1/8/13 at midnight EST.  The winner will receive a set of the new Tinted Lip Buttahs (one of each color) and will be announced on Wednesday morning, 1/9.  Good luck and a happy, healthy new year to everyone!

Green (with envy), Volume 1

Posted by: Emily

When I first heard about Birchbox, from my cool friend, Anna, a few months ago, I became very jealous. She, and about one-hundred thousand other people, receive deluxe samples of fabulous beauty products every month, for a small membership fee, along with discounts, tips, and other special offers. Since Birchbox only occasionally includes natural or organic products– they have sent samples of great  natural brands like Vapour and Dr. Hauschka in the past– it means that, if I joined, I’d be throwing away most of the offerings every month, from old temptations like Kiehl’s and Smashbox. This beauty junkie doesn’t need that temptation.

I started feeling pretty sorry for myself. It seemed everywhere I looked, other subscription companies were popping up. One could pay a monthly fee to receive kids’ toys, women’s clothes, men’s grooming products, baby products, you name it, there’s a delivery “box” company for it. So I began looking for a beauty box that delivered only natural and organic brands– something like Birchbox, but only full of things a Product Junkie’s Rehab devotee would use. Four such companies were nice enough to send me sample boxes to try out and tell you about! Lucky me– I was no longer green with envy. Just green, with a lot of little samples to try!

Over the next few weeks, I will be posting reviews of each of the boxes, one at a time. I will give you a brief description of each box I received, why you might want to subscribe, how much it costs, and my favorite product from each box. (Since the samples in each box each month are different, this doesn’t mean they’re products you’ll necessarily receive in the boxes, but it’ll give you an idea of the kinds of things the company delivers).

First up: Green Grab Bag

Image

Price: $15/month for AT LEAST 6 samples (I got 7)

Shipping: Free

Description from their website:  A Fun, Affordable Way to Try the Best Natural Beauty Products Before You Buy! At least Six Samples Delivered to Your Door for Just $15 a Month and Shipping is Free! White Apricot has been covering natural, organic and vegan beauty productsfor five years. We like to think w´re experts at reporting on all of the best of the best in skin care, haircare, makeup and fragrance. But, we got to thinking – why should we get to have all the fun?! Why shouldn´t you be able to experience the products too. After all, you shouldn´t have to spend a lot of money on products you haven´t tried. So, we created Green Grab Bag! For just $15 a month and free shipping, we hope you´ll join us! What makes this even more fun is that every month is a surprise subscription box, with at least six minis delivered right to your door!

My favorite product:  GGB introduced me to EO Certified Organic Deodorant Spray, and I’m hooked! This is the best product I’ve ever tried in this category, what I like to call “pit perfumes”– they are marketed as stand-alone deodorant sprays, but like Weleda’s Wild Rose spray that I love, and Bubble and Bee’s that Jordan reviewed, I find that they work best when used WITH an actual deodorant (you all know I love DeodoMom). The EO spray they sent me is Vetiver, and I can’t get enough of it’s vetiver, bergamot, grapefruit, geranium, lavender and cedarwood scented blend. This was my gateway drug to EO products– I now love their hand sanitizer sprays, gels, etc. and fully recommend this California Certified Organic Farmers-approved brand.

My take: I got 6 great beauty products, all from brands of which I had not heard before, and each came with a discount code, all but one for 20% off (the other was for 15% off, so not too shabby!) the full-sized product online. I think it’s a fantastic deal, and the price is great. A nice way to try out new brands. I also got in my box a sample of Mighty Leaf Tea, also with a 20% off coupon, so this box isn’t solely beauty products– you might also learn about other natural/organic things! Bonus!!

Here are the other 3 boxes I’ll be reviewing in the coming weeks. Stay Tuned!

Conscious Box

Beauty Box 5

and my new favorite, Goodebox

Check them out, and I will post reviews soon. I will also be reviewing sample offers from Spirit Beauty Lounge (which offers an incredible deal, free shipping, $10 towards your next purchase, and you get to pick your own samples!!– this one is the best) and the Future Favorites box from Hip Apotheca.

Have: Whole Foods 365 Everyday Value Organic Cotton Rounds

After reading the positive review about these cotton rounds on the Glamorganic Goddess, I figured I should really be concerned about not only what products I put on my skin, but also what I put them on with–namely cotton rounds that have been chemically bleached.  I was won over by The Goddess’s arguments about how destructive conventional cotton farming is on the environment, so I’m trying to make a conscious effort to buy more organic cotton.  However, I can’t say I’m won over by these cotton rounds.  I always end up with cotton shreds on my face and fingers, and then waste several seconds trying to remove the stubborn hairy bits stuck to hands.  Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be buying these again.  Does anyone else know of organic cotton rounds that are a bit more sturdy?

Love: All-Natural Boudreaux’s Butt Paste

First, I need to point out the confusion that Emily and I ran into when she asked me for a recommendation for effective diaper rash relief.  We’ve unfortunately had to deal with irritating diaper rash a few times, so I’ve tried a few techniques.  I recommended Boudreaux’s Butt Paste, but I didn’t realize there was a natural version and a non-natural, petroleum-based version.  Emily saw the original formula (non-natural) at her local store and figured, “well, maybe this is something Jordan feels it’s ok to make a concession on since it really cures diaper rash”, even though she was hesitant about the ingredients.  Later that week she mentioned that it had really worked at clearing up her daughter’s diaper rash and I realized that I should write a review of it on the blog.  At that point she said, “but it’s petroleum-based…”  After much discussion on the scent and the color of packaging, we deduced that we had different versions; there must be a natural and a non-natural version.  Thanks to a quick Google search, we discovered that there are, in fact, different versions.   So, if you’re in need of some Butt Paste, we urge you to get the natural version for your sweet baby’s skin.

Ingredients: Aloe Vera, Beeswax, Carnauba Wax, Castor Oil, Citric Acid, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Peruvian Balsam Oil

Since the tube is rather large, and you only use a small amount on baby’s skin–Bless Google–I did a search for other uses for Boudreaux’s Butt Paste and found a multitude of things for which people had used this cream.  Basically, it’s a cure-all for skin ailments– bug bites, acne, psoriasis, dandruff…the list goes on; someone even said it cured their ingrown toenail (??).  I haven’t tried this cream for anything other than a small breakout I had, which it did seem to relieve the redness and made the pimple smaller overnight.  If you’ll remember, I tried Weleda’s Diaper Cream as a blemish remedy once, as well.  The zinc is really effective in drying any breakouts up, and Boudreaux’s has 16% zinc–a bit more than Weleda’s 12%.  I’d be interested to hear if anyone else has found this cream to be a cure-all for anything!

Want:  Eminence Organics SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizer

I am still madly  in love with all Eminence products.  They’re my Creme de la Mer of organic beauty products–on the expensive side (not as much as Creme de la Mer, thankfully), but so effective and luxurious.  Everything I have tried from them has been an instant favorite.  So it’s not a surprise that Emily and I are both itching to try this (figuratively…if it were in the literal sense, I’d recommend rubbing some Boudreaux’s Butt Paste on that itch).  Tinted moisturizers are my favorite daily beauty product.  I like that it gives me some sun protection (if I’m outside at the park or beach, I’ll apply something more heavy-duty), and evens out my skin tone.  But it feels lightweight like a moisturizer, rather than a foundation on top of a moisturizer, which is heavier than I like–especially during the summer.

As an addendum to my Eminence wish list, my friend, Amy, told me about the amazing Eminence facials she gets at Pretty Please Beauty Studio in the Flatiron District of NYC. I’m trying to find a way to get myself some free time to indulge in a relaxing, organic facial!

Zuzu Luxe Mascara

Posted by:  Jordan

I had been wanting to try Zuzu Luxe Mascara for a long time, ever since one of our readers recommended it to us.  So when I was placing a big order on Amazon for baby necessities, I added this little $16 treat to my basket.  If you’ve been following our natural cosmetics search, you know that we’ve had a really tough time finding a natural mascara that we love as much as our old conventional ones.  And unfortunately the same goes for this mascara.  It’s not bad at all–but it’s nothing to shout from the rooftops about either.

The ingredients are very clean, which I appreciate, and the formula is super-gentle so it’s great for people with sensitive eyes.  And like the company promises, the mascara resists most smudging (I do occasionally find myself having to do a little q-tip cleanup under the eye after a few hours but it wipes off your skin very easily, thereby avoiding raccoon eyes.  Or worse, when you’re trying to clean up the raccoon eye thing you end up with red, irritated eyes from tugging at the skin…none of those problems exist with this mascara, thankfully).  However, the mascara doesn’t do much for me beyond that.  It’s a very natural look; certainly not the mascara you’d want if you’re trying to get a thick, dramatic look for your lashes.  You definitely need to add a few coats to make this mascara show up on your lashes.  Natural is fine for me most days, but sometimes by the end of the day I look at myself and try to remember if I even put any makeup on that morning or not.  That’s how natural it is!

Zuzu Luxe is a brand of Gabriel Cosmetics.  I do love the company’s philosophy and how they got started.  The CEO and Founder, Gabriel DeSantino, became interested in natural cosmetics as a child, after watching his grandmother create healing, homeopathic products utilizing ingredients from the sea near her home in Mexico. After years of research he founded Gabriel Cosmetics. You can buy all products online on their website (free shipping if you spend over $100), on Amazon (as I did), or at Whole Foods.  I would love to try more of their cosmetics in the future so I can report back on more products from this 100% natural, cruelty-free line…let us know if you have tried any other products from this company and can recommend anything!

Marie Veronique Organics

Posted by:  Jordan

Photo courtesy of Fig+Sage: read their comprehensive review of MVO by clicking on photo!

You’re going to hate me after I tell you about my latest skincare obsession.  Well, I hope you’ll thank me too, because I think you’ll end up loving these products as much as I do.  But if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to go out and immediately buy every incredible product that Marie Veronique Organics makes!  Thus, the hate me part of the equation comes when you see your credit card bill.

With humble beginnings in her Bay Area kitchen, Marie Veronique Nadeau, a former chemistry teacher, started this all-natural skincare company in 2003 as a holistic and eco-friendly way to focus on aging gracefully.  Her company sincerely focuses on ways to not only help consumers make an educated decision (see the Glossary of Ingredients which explains each ingredient they use, or the News & Research page to learn more), but they also donate 10% of their proceeds to the Acumen Fund, an organization that works to create opportunities for women and children in third world countries.  Emily and I just love companies like this–an intelligent, go-getter type of woman who started her own business that helps others look and feel their best, while simultaneously helping our environment and those less fortunate than us.  See, now don’t you just want to buy everything from this company?  If you’re not yet convinced, let me just rave about the best part–their products!!

We were generously sent samples of three products to test out:

A water-resistant SPF 25+ sunscreen made with no harmful chemicals or nanoparticles.  If Sun Putty was my favorite sunscreen last year, this is the winner for this year!  It goes on smoothly and evenly and protected me from a VERY hot and sunny day out at Rockaway Beach in NY yesterday.  A 2.7 ounce bottle (travel friendly size–thank you, MVO!) sells for $19, which is competitive with other natural sunscreens on the market.  Plus, EWG’s Skin Deep gives it a safety ranking of just 1, which is great!  As a sidenote, EWG loves Marie Veronique Organics as much as I do–they recently included all three of these sun-protection products in their Top 25 Sunscreens this year!

We’ve all heard the importance of a serum in our skin-care regimen and this one is fantastic.  It has a slightly cinnamon-y scent and immediately tightens your skin upon contact, without drying it.  I was worried at first that the tightening sensation was because it was sucking all the remaining moisture out my skin, but that’s not at all the case!  In one word this serum with SPF 20 is perfection.  You can use it alone on rainy days or days when you’ll be indoors most of the day–it leaves a great matte finish.  On very sunny days or when you plan to be outside for an extended amount of time, it’s advised to use this product in conjunction with the Moisturizing Face Screen.

Update/Correction: My original post was misinforming–I mistakenly gave you the link to the Anti-Wrinkle Serum, thinking that it was the same thing as the Anti-Aging Day Serum.  It’s not!!  I have corrected the link to take you to the correct product, which is now called Everyday Sheer Coverage (it used to be called the Anti-Aging Day Serum).  Confusion abound!  But the good news is that the Everyday Sheer Coverage is only $50 for 2 oz, not $140/ounce like the super luxe Anti-Wrinkle Serum.

Behold my favorite product I’ve tried from MVO!  This stuff is like the glamour girl version of my former favorite tinted moisturizer with sunscreen from 100% Pure (which, don’t get me wrong, I still love my 100% Pure but it just can’t compare with the end results from this product from MVO!)  It evens out my skin tone, immediately makes my pores smaller and my skin firmer, and creates a nearly flawless look by blending in imperfections and discolorations.  It also gives my complexion a nice glowy look (not to be mistaken with shiny because it’s not at all a shiny, oily finish).  I can’t rave enough about how much better my skin looks after applying this miracle product to my face in the mornings!  This ultra lightweight (perfect for summer!) moisturizing sunscreen comes in three tints to choose from: No Tint, Light, and Medium.  Apparently for the fairest of the fair the No Tint is recommended since it has a yellow tint that evens out any redness without adding any color.  I’ve been using the Light Tint which blends perfectly for my skin.  Emily has been trying out the Medium Tint which works for her slightly tanner skin with olive undertones.  However, I tested out the Medium Tint to see how much different it was from the Light and it blended perfectly on my skin as well.  I think the colors are just so universally flattering that you can’t make a wrong choice!  Thankfully the price of this product won’t send you into sticker shock: $40 for 2 ounces.  One tip on how to apply this moisturizer: apply a few drops to your fingertips and then gently press the liquid into your skin, rather than rubbing it in.  I’ve found that this technique helps it spread evenly while not using an excessive amount of product.

So, where to start with all these products?  I’m personally wanting to buy the Anti-Aging Travel Kit  which allows you to try a cleanser of your choice, the anti-aging mist, the anti-aging oil (which I’ve read is addictive!), and the Moisturizing Face Screen in your choice of the 3 tints.  All of 4 products in a handy travel/sample sizes for $51 should help you decide which products you want to invest in full-size versions of.

Or, if you’re already sold on my review of the Moisturizing Face Screen and know that you’d like to buy the full-size version of that, we’ve got a special Product Junkies Rehab exclusive deal for you, which lasts until 7/31/11! Receive a free 1/4 oz Anti-Aging Oil+ (a $20 value!) with the purchase of the Moisturizing Face Screen using code MVOJunkies at checkout.  See, maybe you’ll love me, after all!

The Great Deodorant Hunt, Part 8: Soapwalla Deodorant Cream

Posted by:  Jordan

I never thought I’d find a natural deodorant that works as well as the homemade recipe I’ve been using, but I believe Soapwalla has done it!

I love so many things about this all-natural deodorant cream: the smell is herbal-y fresh, the application is easier to apply than my homemade version (as described on their website, the “frosting-like consistency ensures effortless manual application”, plus it doesn’t solidify when cold), it’s cheap ($10), it’s a local Brooklyn company, and most importantly…it really WORKS!

I’ve been using this deodorant for over a month to ensure that the effectiveness didn’t wear off, which sometimes happens with products, and I can happily report that it’s still holding up, even to the couple 90 degree days we’ve had!  I do occasionally find that a refresher later in the day helps with any emerging odors, so sometimes I’ll try to remember to bring the deodorant in my purse.

A few friends/readers have noted that the amount of baking soda in the homemade recipe irritates their skin, so I’d suggest trying out this deodorant if you’ve experienced that, because it seems very gentle to me.

I read a couple reviews that claimed Soapwalla Deodorant Cream  absorbed moisture more than any other natural deodorants the testers had tried; unfortunately, I didn’t really find this to be true for me.  I’m still sweating.  Of course, since it doesn’t contain harmful aluminum, it’s not meant to be an antiperspirant, so sweat just comes with the natural deodorant territory.

Soapwalla owner, Rachel Winard, creates all of Soapwalla’s organic products in her Brooklyn apartment kitchen (I love this!) and never uses ingredients tested on animals.  She created the line because she suffers from sensitive skin caused by lupus.  I’m anxious to try the other products in Soapwalla’s line, including the face serums, homemade soaps, and body scrubs!  I bought my deodorant locally in Brooklyn at Bend and Bloom yoga studio in Park Slope, but for non-New Yorkers, everything in Soapwalla’s line can be bought on the beloved site, Etsy!

Vapour Organic Beauty Giveaway!! Siren Lipstick!

Posted by: Emily

As many of you know, we here at PJR are huge fans of Vapour Organic Beauty and we were thrilled when they were featured on The Today Show recently and offered several promotional kits for only $18! So, of course, I ordered one :)

Two days after the Today Show appearance, I got my Drama Queen set in the mail from Vapour. [This is kind of irrelevant, but I have to give them major props for how fast it arrived, given how inundated they must have been from all the orders from the Today Show appearance. We heart you, Vapour!]

Anyway, more importantly, I LOVE the Siren Lipstick I got in this kit. The color, Knockout, is incredible. I have been wanting to try a new lip color from Vapour, and just wasn’t motivated because, as much as I love Vapour, I do sometimes wish I could try out the products in a conveniently located store near me, and this kept me from taking the ordering plunge. Luckily, the Today Show $18 kits broke me out of this funk! And Knockout is the exact color I was looking for, even if I didn’t know it’s what I needed. I love when that happens! It’s deep red, but sheer and equally easy to wear with no other makeup on or with a full face. And it is so moisturizing!

However, after falling madly in love with Knockout, I discovered that the shade has been discontinued! I was so sad! So I wrote to our good friends at Vapour– they have the best customer service, ever– and they replied with great news! They have just launched 10 new shades, for a total of 16 Siren Lipstick shades in all, and they sent us some to try out! The best part is that they were able to help me find a wonderful replacement for Knockout! Torrid (#413) is very similar, almost identical, and the new formula is absolutely wonderful– the shades last even longer and are just as moisturizing– amazing!

Want to hear some even better news? The nice, generous, awesome folks at Vapour have offered to give one of you, our lucky readers, 3 shades of your choice of Siren Lipstick in a giveaway! We’ll choose the winner from this post and she will get to choose the shades of Siren Lipstick she will receive! Jordan and I are busy trying them all out now, and I can tell you, they are all winners!!

Post below and tell us which shades you’d love to try! We’ll pick the winner at random after noon on Wednesday, May 18. You can also post on our Facebook page for an additional chance to enter!

Below is info about the fabulous Siren Lipstick from Vapour’s website. I personally guarantee that you will LOVE this product! And read below how natural and healthy it is!!!
