The Great Deodorant Hunt, Part 3: Lavanila Healthy Deodorant

Posted by: Jordan
I’m excited to announce that this is the best natural deodorant I’ve tried thus far.  Of course, Junkie that I am, that doesn’t mean I’ll stop trying more.  It’s in our nature–always on the prowl for even better products.  I’d rate Lavanila as an 8.5 if my standard Dove deodorant was a 10.  I tried the Vanilla Grapefruit scent because I’m usually more of a fresh/citrus scent fan, rather than anything sweet or powdery. While all of their deodorants incorporate vanilla, this one is the best at combining the sweet vanilla with fresh citrus notes.  Even though I’m not usually hip on the sweet scents, this one is growing on me.  By the end of the day, I’m smelling just a tiny bit “natural”, but it’s nothing that a quick re-swipe of the smooth, dome-shaped stick can’t remedy.  I even tested this deodorant out on my way home from Puerto Rico and I was actually smelling pretty harmless, especially compared to the test I did on the way from NY to Puerto Rico with the Dr. Hauschka.  Much improved!!!
Lavanila touts their “Healthy Deodorant” is 100% Natural and 100% Healthy.  Slightly hokey marketing in my cynical point of view, but you can’t call what they leave out of their deodorants hokey at all.  This deodorant is free of parabens, aluminum, PEG’s, petrochemicals, phthalates, and synthetic dyes (wow, that’s a long list of things you shouldn’t put on your underarms).  Just to clarify, this is not an antiperspirant so it doesn’t leave my underarms dry all day, but I can learn to look past that in order to decrease my chances of breast cancer.  Think about it: it’s not natural in any stretch of the imagination to prohibit your sweat glands from sweating.  Truth in Aging is a blog that I really enjoy and trust about why some cosmetics work and others don’t.  While not all of their reviewed products are natural, they do a great job of explaining tough scientific questions about ingredients. Their review of Lavanila deodorant gives us a more comprehensive explanation of why this deodorant is coined “The Healthy Deodorant.”  Take a look!
As with most deodorants, especially solids,  it can leave a little white residue if you’re not careful when putting on your clothes.  The formula is really soft, not at all sticky, and it dries quickly.  Plus, their packaging is just really pretty!
Here is a list of the ingredients:
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Juice, Water), Propanediol (Corn Derived), Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Sodium Stearate (Coconut Derived), Silica, Carrageenan (Seaweed Derived), Stearyl Behenate (Coconut Derived), Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon Peel Oil), Inulin (Artichoke Derived), Saccharomyces Ferment, Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide (Sugar Derived), Yeast Beta Glucan, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Usnea Barbata (Lichen) Extract, Valeriana Officinalis Root Extract (Valerian), Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal) Extract, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Lycium Barbarum Fruit Extract (Goji Berry), Botanical Fragrance Blend.
PJR reader, Erin, had this to say in the comments about some of the ingredients listed in Lavanila deodorant:

When you see that term “derived from” it’s a marketing ploy, to get you to think that the ingredient is “natural”…“derived from” ingredients are not in their natural state anymore, they have been chemically processed and extracted, making them no longer in their true natural form… I call this greenwashing.

We encourage all of our readers to do their own research and leave their comments of what they like, don’t like, etc.  Like we always try to stress to our readers, friends and family, buy the natural products that you feel are within your “safe” level.  This deodorant is the best I’ve tried so far, and it’s a huge improvement from my old standard in terms of naturalness, so I’d still view it within my natural product comfort level.  Next up in my Great Deodorant Hunt, as suggested by Trish at Scent Hive and our reader, Erin: Miessence Tahitian Breeze deodorant!

  1. Great review Jordan! I was really impressed with their deod as well. As you mention, they push it with their marketing which is troublesome. “Botanical Fragrance Blend” is not quite accurate when you find “nature identical oils” buried in their website, code for synthetic. Greenwashing abounds with Lavanila, but certainly better than drugstore options.

So happy you guys are around 🙂

    Hi there,

I too, have been experimenting with various liquid spritzes for my “sweaty pits” this winter – woe is me come summer! Weleda Rose only works in the dead of winter and while fine if I’m home cleaning the house, it’s doesn’t pack the punch that I need. Have you tried BALANCE deodorant by International Orange (in SF)? I’m digging it! Really clean, herbaceous scent with decent staying power. Like your blog – the engagement story was hilarious! Best of luck, Tiffany

Oooh, i used to always want to go to the International Orange spa when I lived in SF! I want to try their deodorant this second (it’s really hot in my office today). Thanks for the recommendation and for reading!!

  4. Thanks to this here blog of yours, I fell in love with Lavanila Deodorant…. my favorite scent is the Lavender Vanilla. Seeing that my really great friend, Cindy, is the buyer for the natural lines at Sephora.. I have a really nice hook up and today she showered me with some lovely products.. I used the Vanilla Grapefruit body butter! YUM! It smells so nice. I also used the Coconut Vanilla shower gel… soooo wonderful. I would highly recommend these… however, I don’t know the price because, like I said, I gots the hook up yo!

  5. I’ve had 2 sticks of this deo in my drawer for 3 months, (since a big spending-spree at Sephora in January) and finally, after getting completely FED UP with the stuff I’ve been buying at Whole Foods (Alba) which DOES NOT WORK, I pulled Lavanila our of my drawer yesterday. I LOVE IT! It worked! I am thrilled with it – and, I’m thrilled to have found your blog through a Google search to see where I can stock up on this fabulous product (before someone does something dumb, like discontinue it!)

I’m here to stay, with thanks to you for your blog!

Thanks so much for such sweet comments, Janet!!! I’m so glad you’re loving the Lavanila deodorant! And i’m with you, always so nervous that companies are going to discontinue the really great products! And i’m made a mental note–don’t bother trying out Alba! Thanks 🙂

    • Welcome, Janet! We’re so happy to have you. Make sure to enter our giveaway for Living Tree Botanicals! Nice to “meet” you! — Emily

  8. Nicohle

I have been using this product for a little over a year and now I have suddenly developed a rash under both of my arms. I was wondering if they have suddenly changed some of the ingredients?

    • Jordan

Hi Nicohle, So sorry to hear about the rash! I stopped using it after I found other things that worked better for me, so I can’t say…I would try calling their customer service line and explaining the issue. If they DID change something in their formula, they should know if it’s causing issues with some people!

I also ended up with a rash on my underarms which turned into contact dermatitis and a yeast infection (of the underarm!). My Dr took one look at the ingredient list and said to pitch it. Sad – waste of $18!

    • Jordan

You’re kidding! What a terrible experience! I’m no longer using this deodorant (using soapwalla, naked eye beauty, or bubble and bee–all of which are cream deodorants). Did your doctor say what in the ingredient list may have caused it?

    • Jordan

Also, you know if you bought it at sephora you can return it anytime even if it’s half used and no receipt!

  10. Alice

Do you know if you can buy this in the UK?

    • Jordan

Hi Alice, I’m not sure about in stores in the UK, but it is sold on Sephora.com so you could order it there.

This company should try responding to emails or answering their phone for once. Products are good but customer service is less than satisfactory. I sent the same email three times and even tried calling during business hours. I got a recording each time. I have a simple question about a product that is unavailable.

    • I’m sorry, Meg, that’s frustrating. I’m actually doing a post coming up about customer service and natural brands. I was going to focus on some brands and sites that have excellent customer service (Hipapothica.com is amazing, Revolution Organics is great, I love Alima Pure and Vapour) but maybe we’ll open the comments for people to warn others about companies whose customer service is less than desirable. It really does matter…. –Emily

I’m glad I found this blog. I was loving my Lavinila deoderant,it actually worked and was aluminum free and then about two weeks into use I broke out in a horrible rash under both arms. I’ve stopped using it of course and will take it back to the store to see if they will refund me any of the high cost. I just want to find and aluminum free and effective deodorant
    !

    • Jordan

Hi Denise! So glad you found us!! You have to try either bubble & bee’s pit putty cream (I love the orange vanilla scent ) OR the Brooklyn-based Soapwalla deodorant. They’re both the best all-natural, trustworthy, and–most importantly–effective deodorants I’ve found. Keep us posted on how the search goes!
      Best,
      Jordan
