The Challenge (About Us)

Who we are: two 30ish New Yorkers who bonded over a shared love of beauty products.

PJR Jordan and Emily 2014

The mission is simple: we love our products but we hate the junk. Starting this year, 2010, we’ll be purging our beauty routine of harmful toxins. We’re going to attempt to use only organic and natural skincare, haircare, makeup, and, yes–even deodorant!

It’s going to be a challenge. We LOVE our products– we’ll miss things like Stila Lip Gloss, Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar, and Creme de La Mer! Even Maybelline Full n’ Soft Mascara has to go, and Jordan’s been using it since college! Our hope is that these companies that make our favorite products will come out with green lines, and that eventually the beauty industry will hear our cry and go completely natural, but in the meantime, we are setting out to find new favorites. Why should it be so hard to find products without poison to put on our largest organ– skin?

This idea has been a long time in the making, but it’s a new year and we’re ready for a new challenge! Join us as we try to rid our lives, and our beloved beauty products, of unnecessary chemicals.

  4. Hi ladies!

I love your idea, how fabulous 🙂

I can’t wait to see what you all find in green beauty. It’s been a treat for me to discover m/u without all the nasties that I love just as much (if not more) than my old faves.

    Cheers,
    Trish

  7. Thanks for your info on Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap. I have been using it for about a month and love it. I am addicted to the lavender! Thanks again. you guys are doing a bangin’ job!

  8. Roz

Thanks for the info so far. I just jumped on the natural bandwagon myself. Like you, I cleaned out my bathroom and makeup drawers, couldn’t believe how much money I threw out the window. But I wanted to be healthier and I am hoping to pull in my husband, family and friends along the way. Many of them are resistant because we are all so used to using the chemicals all our lives. It is never too late though….

    • Jordan

Thanks so much for reading, Roz! I have a confesson, though…I never threw my old products out! I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I don’t use them anymore, but they’re sitting in a bag in my closet–waiting for what, i have no idea! I guess for my guilt to subside over throwing out all that money!

  12. “The Great Deodorant Hunt” has changed my life. My struggle to find a deodorant that I can feel safe using has been long…and my poor pits are very resentful! You saved me a lot of time, energy, money, and headaches by reviewing brands and home remedies that I’ve been meaning to try myself. Just know that somewhere, in a tiny town in central Massachusetts, there is a very, very, VERY appreciative fan. Keep up the good work, you guys! 🙂

    • Jordan

Wow, thanks for such a sweet message, Mayrena!! I’ve been recommended more to try, so stay tuned as I keep testing more!

  13. hi ladies 🙂 wow what a great blog, love your ideas!

    Hello,
I’ve been obsessed with MVO products ever since I read about it on this blog and tried them. Thanks so much!!
Do you know of any products that are similar to them that I can use as well?
    Thanks!

    • We are so glad you love MVO! They are pretty unique, but there are more and more small-batch products like them out there. We will try and profile more as soon as we find out about them. Try Natropathica, maybe? And you know we seriously love Weleda. Pangea Organics makes great stuff– they’re on sale on Gloss48.com right now. John Masters Organics is lovely, but not always 100% organic/natural so read labels. Is that a good start? Thanks for reading!! ~Emily
