Posted by: Jordan

It’s a new year and we’re ready to introduce our readers to some amazing new companies we’ve been loving this Fall/Winter!  First up is the incredible natural perfumer, Strange Invisible Perfumes, who have graciously offered a giveaway to one lucky reader!  Read on for details on how to be entered into this heavenly giveaway.

Emily and I got to smell a lot of Strange Invisible Perfumes’ products at the Indie Beauty Expo this past Fall, and we’ve been loving the samples we received ever since.  I’ve tried out all the scents of the body wash & lotions and each one is so sophisticated and beautiful.  It’s hard to choose a favorite–they all smell gorgeous–but if forced to choose, I’d have to say the Sage + Rose scent is a standout for me.  But I think my absolute favorite is the Lavender + Vetiver scent.  The scent lasts at least half the day, and every time I catch a subtle whiff of it, I continue to love it.  Ever since switching over to completely natural products with no synthetic fragrances in 2010, I’m extra sensitive to scents.  Anything too strong, cloying, or artificial gives me an instant headache.  All of SI Perfumes’ bath and body washes use only 100% natural botanical scents–nothing artificial here!  So the scents are naturally fresh and pretty.  I’ve found that the Lavender + Vetiver scent seems to last the longest, which I appreciate–I should mention that these high quality products are not inexpensive.  I can justify the price of the body wash and lotion since they basically double as a perfume for me.

SI Perfumes recently came out with their Zodiac line of perfumes.  For a complete review of these, read the beautifully written write-up from Scent Hive.  They’ve created a perfume specifically for your zodiac sign.  So fun to read what your sign smells like!

Aries: The Innovator. Element: Fire. The first sign of the zodiac, Aries is able to make incredible things happen quickly. Hydro-distilled essences of cinnamon, rose, and angelica fuel a vibrant imagination. Frankincense, benzoin, lavender, and sandalwood cool fiery impulses, encouraging the composure needed to realize visionary plans.

Taurus: The Sensual Realist. Element: Earth. Ruled by Venus, Taurus is a compassionate sign resistant to the influence of others. Lush earthy notes of geranium, maté, oakmoss, vetiver, and frankincense encourage flexibility and optimism without compromising shrewdness. Neroli, rose, and grapefruit court the senses and lighten the mood, allowing Taurus to shine even more brightly.

Gemini: The Mastermind. Element: Air. Gemini, symbolized by the twins, is an agile thinker with the dazzling ability to see all angles of an issue. This sign is associated with duality, a concept often confused with duplicity—hence the misguided characterization. Charming notes of violet, gardenia, and angelica echo Gemini’s alluring presence and sparkle against a darker backdrop of amber and leather.

Cancer: The Levelheaded Bohemian. Element: Water. Cancer is the only sign of the zodiac ruled by the moon. While being adventurous and free spirited, those born under Cancer are known for their cleverness, generosity, and devotion to family. Mandarin, patchouli, and lily of the valley encourage Cancer’s mischievous sense of humor, while sumptuous notes of Tahitian vanilla, amber, and leather make this sign feel right at home.

Leo: The Ringleader. Element: Fire. Leo is the only constellation ruled by the sun. Hydro-distilled essences of neroli, bergamot, lemon, and cardamom reinforce Leo’s charisma and inviting style of leadership while smoothing out domineering tendencies. Ambrette seed and jasmine sambac tame Leo’s fire, making gratification come more easily.

Virgo: The Exacting Romantic. Element: Earth. Virgo is the guardian of quality, and this sign’s pursuit of excellence is often mistaken for arbitrary perfectionism. Baked earth and palo santo reflect deep introspection and a dedication to nuance. Sparkling notes of neroli, temple mandarin, and rose speak to Virgo’s need for beauty and precision, sweetly quieting the critic.

Libra: The Connoisseur. Element: Air. Libra, ruled by Venus, is the most approachable of all air signs, balancing elegance, wit, and mischief with legendary skill. Centering essences of rose, grapefruit, and iris fulfill Libra’s unyielding need for beauty, while golden champa, myrtle, and basil calm Libra’s tendency to worry.

Scorpio: The Enigma. Element: Water. Scorpio, the dark horse, the infamous rock star of the zodiac, is nothing if not a mystery. Vetiver and palo santo both respect and soften Scorpio’s iron will, while frankincense and cinnamon reflect Scorpio’s deep spiritual wisdom and vast knowledge. Leather and white Cognac encourage Scorpio’s brooding intellect to lighten up and live joyously in the moment.

Sagittarius: The Rolling Stone. Element: Fire. The iconic nomad sign, Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius lives for adventure and tends to be a social butterfly. Neroli and lime reflect Sagittarius’s innate optimism, mutability, and fiery ambition. Grounding essences of cypress, bay leaf, and honeycomb encourage this nomadic sign to appreciate present surroundings.

Capricorn: The Force to Be Reckoned With. Element: Earth. Ruled by Saturn, Capricorn is famous for a nearly heroic sense of commitment, patience, and drive. Iris, frankincense, and Tahitian vanilla speak to Capricorn’s earthy, sensual side and strong need for stability. Neroli, jasmine, and white Cognac invite Capricorn to let go of routine and enjoy the rewards of spontaneity.

Aquarius: The Rebel with a Cause. Element: Air. Aquarius, the third and final air sign, is one of the most charismatic signs of the zodiac. Neroli and rosemary fuel Aquarius’s independence, intellect, and humanitarianism, urging Aquarians to put their global ideals into action. Lavender, white sage, and frankincense soothe anxiety, grounding Aquarius when airy detachment sets in.

Pisces: The Dreamer. Element: Water. Empathic and sensitive, Pisces, the twelfth sign of the zodiac, is seen as the wisest and most reflective of all. Grounding essences of frankincense, cedarwood, and black pepper guide Pisces through occasionally stormy seas of emotion. Night-blooming jasmine, kewda, and lime keep the waters of creativity abundantly flowing.

PiperWai Natural Deodorant

Posted by:  Jordan

Piperwai

Introducing my newest favorite natural deodorant: PiperWai.

A direct quote from my husband, “This is what I’ve been looking for my whole life.  I don’t want the aluminum and junk in my deodorant, you know, but until now I haven’t tried one that actually works all day for me.”  I usually do the majority of product testing around here, and if it’s something that I think works really well, and he might use too, I make him put it to the test.  Test was aced and PiperWai is now officially replacing my husband’s conventional “man cologne” smelling Speed Stick.

PiperWai was founded by two girl friends (much like myself and Emily) on a mission to find a healthier alternative to chemical-filled anti-perspirants that actually works all day and won’t irritate sensitive skin.  It’s the first deodorant on the market to use activated charcoal, which makes it super absorbent and odor-eliminating.  The cream rubs in clear and easily, and has a pleasant gender-neutral herbal scent.  Despite the initial weirdness I had for the play-doh like texture, after testing it for several weeks now, I can officially say that our family is in love with it.  I don’t often gush about natural deodorants, as there aren’t many on the market that work all day and keep both me and my husband from smelling too “natural”.  Sometimes I’ll try one and like it for a few days, but then the effectiveness starts to fade.  Not so with PiperWai.  I have a feeling it will be a permanent staple in our bathroom from now on.  If you’re still on the hunt for the ultimate natural deodorant for you and your family, I definitely encourage you to try this out!

DIY Beauty Recipes Courtesy of Yuve Vegan Nutritional Shakes

Posted by: Jordan

Yuve shakes I was recently introduced to Yuve, a vegan nutritional shake that is non-GMO, soy-free,  and dairy-free and made with raw chia seeds and cocoa.  According to their co-founder:

Created by a former Russian dancer, Yuve is a new, convenient, and delicious way to consume all of the essential ingredients the body requires to sustain health, beauty and youthfulness on the go. Moreover, it’s formulated using over 25 all natural ingredients and avoids the sins of its industry entirely. No Artificial Colors. No Artificial Sweeteners. No Artificial Flavors. Whatsoever. Yuve was created less than a year ago and had a big success among its consumers.
On a hurried morning–as they all are now that school has started–earlier this week, I decided to put my sample package in a blender with some almond milk and ice.  It was so delicious, you guys!!!  While drinking my yummy, frothy, healthy shake, I skimmed over all the vitamins, protein (16 grams!), minerals, fiber, and lack of calories and sugar in the shake.  There’s nothing artificial, just an easy way to drink a super healthy breakfast!  Yuve shakes also have beautifying ingredients: “Resveratrol, vitamins, and antioxidants improve your skin, hair and fluid balance” I read on the package.  Sounds pretty good to me.  And tastes great too–trust my 4-year-old, who eagerly helped me enjoy it! (Is it terrible that I tried to drink it as quickly as I could so as not to share it??)  After quickly (selfishly) downing my shake, I ran off to volunteer for Organ Donor Enrollment Day which included a fun (read: terrifying) spin class.  Upon completing a sweaty morning of spinning and trying to get NY’ers to sign up to be organ donors, I realized…I wasn’t counting the minutes until lunchtime like I normally am at 11am.  Yuve, thanks for making my crazy morning that much less like a Cathy comic since I didn’t have the typical mid-morning hangriness due to my typical lacking breakfast.  Interested in trying Yuve for yourself?  Sign up for your free sample on their website.
And now, as promised, the DIY beauty recipes from Yuve!  I can’t wait to try out all of these as the weather cools down and I spend more time at home during my free time.

Super Facial Mask with Pomegranate

This mask works for pretty much all types of skin. Easy to make, it moisturizes your skin and leaves it looking and feeling softer. It is important to use Manuka honey and not just a regular honey due to its great antibacterial properties. Also, make sure you use unrefined organic Shea butter. There are lots of different types of Shea butter on the market, but keep in mind that refined and ultra-refined Shea butter will not have the same healing properties as the raw one!
Do NOT use canned pomegranate juice! Only natural pomegranate squeezed juice revitalizes skin by promoting collagen and elastin production. It also reduces the signs of skin aging caused by sun damage and exposure, such as wrinkles and fine lines.  Cacao helps to decrease puffiness in the face and the eye area and brightens skin.  Sounds good, right? Well, simply follow the instructions and enjoy fruitful results!

2 tsp Manuka Honey
1 tsp Raw Shea Butter
1 tsp Fresh-Squeezed Pomegranate Juice
1 tsp Raw Cacao Powder
1 tsp Fresh-Squeezed Apple Juice (use instead of cacao for a more toning effect)

Instructions:

1. Heat up 2 teaspoons of Manuka honey and 1 teaspoon of Shea butter.
2. Add 1 teaspoon of fresh-squeezed pomegranate juice and 1 teaspoon of cacao
3. Cool off the mixture and apply it to the face.
4. Leave it on for 10-15min and then rinse with warm water.

Facial Toning Ice –Cubes Natural Skin Treatment

The benefits of using a facial toner are remarkable. Smaller looking pores, refreshed feeling and the added moisture are just a few of the advantages. But did you know that using a toner also helps prevent ingrown hairs, restores the pH balance, and adds a layer of protection to your face? Toner achieves this by tightening cell gaps and reducing the penetration of impurities and containments in the environment.

Our Facial Toning Ice Cubes mixture is an easy and natural way to gain these benefits and all from the comfort of your kitchen. With only five ingredients you probably already have around your house, you can create a batch of our facial toning ice cubes and use this natural skin treatment first thing in the morning.

Ingredients:
Handful of fresh parsley
2 Cucumbers
4 tbsp Aloe Vera

Directions:

1. Place fresh parsley in a saucepan with water and let water boil.
2. Strain water with parsley and put clear water in a bowl.
3. Place cucumber and kiwi in a juice maker and squeeze juice.
4. Mix juice with the parsley water in a bowl.
5. Add aloe Vera juice and mix everything.
6. Pour liquid in ice cube trays and put it in the fridge.
7. Apply one cube to your face every morning.

Coco Lemon Body Scrub

How well did you care for your skin this summer?  Summer activities can make our skin look and feel drier than normal, and a body lotion may not be enough to replenish your skin and bring back its natural moisture and glow, however, an exfoliating can.  Our Homemade Lemon Sugar Scrub recipe will not only save you money but will leave your skin feeling fresh, soft to the touch and smelling yummy.  Whip up a batch for you and while you’re at it make a batch for a friend or family member. Their skin will thank you!

Ingredients

½ Cup Organic Coconut Oil
½ Coconut Flour
¼ cup Grind Oatmeal
15 drops Lemon Essential Oil
15 drops Essential Rose Oil
20 drops Essential Sweet Orange Oil (You can use other essential oils too)

Directions

Seaweed Bath Company Shampoo & Conditioner, plus GIVEAWAY!

Posted by:  Jordan

Seaweed Bath Co Shampoo Last Fall I posted how I was loving the bath soaks from Seaweed Bath Co.  In that post I mentioned how I couldn’t wait to try their shampoo and conditioner, especially on my husband who was (note the spoiler word, “was“!) battling scalp psoriasis (or some majorly severe dandruff, not sure which).  I’ve been waiting to post this review for a while because I reallllly wanted to test it over the course of several months.  I ordered Seaweed Bath Co’s Balancing Argan Hair Set in the Eucalyptus & Peppermint just after the holidays and have been using it since late winter.

Well, I am here to personally attest that I don’t think my husband and I will ever use another shampoo and conditioner again! Not only is his dry, flaky scalp completely healed (and this has been an issue we’ve been tackling for close to a decade), but as an added, unexpected benefit, this shampoo/conditioner is like a miracle for my hair.  It somehow gives my hair incredible bounce and volume, and whenever I use anything else it just doesn’t compare.  Of course, it’s 100% natural and made with only ingredients that are good for your body.    Up until this point natural shampoo was just so utilitarian.  It cleaned my hair, but nothing special beyond that.  This shampoo and conditioner changed all that!  I even had a group of girl friends stay at my house recently for a NY girls weekend,  and I made them test it out.  Several went directly home and ordered it too!  It’s that good. Try it once and see if you’re as devoted as we are.  Order it on their website and get 15% the boxed set using code SPRING2015. Or get the set on a special Zulily sale today through Thurs 6/18/15 for only $15.99!

One lucky winner will receive his or her own set for free, simply by entering our giveaway!  Enter between now and Sunday, June 21st at midnight EST and we’ll choose one winner at random.  In order to enter, please leave a comment below.  For an extra entry, like us on Facebook and comment there, too.  Winner will be announced Monday, 6/22  on Facebook, so be sure to check there!  Contest open to Continental US residents only.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes–and they look prettier for it!

Posted by:  Jordan

Jane Iredale Smoke Gets in Your Eyes palette

All winter I’ve been obsessed with only one eye shadow palette: Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Jane Iredale.  It truly is the perfect eye palette and here’s why:

1. It’s perfect for day or night.  The two colors on the left (Nude & Violet) are what I use during the daytime.  For evening I add the middle shade (Aubergine) to my crease.  For a really special evening I’ll dab a little of the Sheer Gold (far right) in the middle of my eye, plus use the GORGEOUS shimmery black shade (Sizzle) as my eyeliner by wetting an eyeliner brush and dabbing it along my eyelids.  So easy and works for every occasion!

2. It’s flattering on everyone

3. There isn’t a shade in it that I don’t love.  Some I’ll use more than others, but all of them are so elegant and pretty.

4. It’s seasonless.  It doesn’t scream Fall or Spring, like some palettes do.

Go treat yourself now!  You won’t regret it, I promise.  Also a great gift idea!

The Seaweed Bath Company

Posted by:  Jordan

Fall is just around the corner and that means one thing for me: bath season is here (and pumpkin beer, but that’s for another blog)!  I don’t feel much like taking baths in the summer, but in the past week the weather has changed here in NY and it’s definitely feeling more like Fall.  So, as I was filling up the tub a couple days ago, I remembered the single-use bag of Wildly Natural Seaweed Powder Bath I had bought back in June when I was on a girls’ trip in Chicago.  My friend, who lives in Austin, TX, and I were browsing the spa’s gift shop after our treatments and she saw products from The Seaweed Bath Co., a natural bath and body company based in Austin, and mentioned, “oh, my friends started this company after the husband suffered from severe psoriasis and nothing worked for him.” (Read Adam’s bio about how his chronic psoriasis led to him creating the company here). Of course, natural product junkie that I am, I had to pick up a bag.  I’m helping support a friend of a friend–and it was only a $3 little treat for myself!  I had put the bag away in my linen closet all summer, and just remembered about it this week.  So I poured the contents into my bath and watched the murky brownish-green water fill up the tub.  Y’all…I am such a huge fan of this product after just one bath that I had to let you guys know about it immediately!

Seaweed Bath Co Powder Bath

The bath itself wasn’t a transcendent experience.  The scent was a little, well, seaweedy, and like I mentioned, the color was little off-putting (don’t worry, it doesn’t leave a brown ring around your tub, which has happened to me before with some bath soaks).  But, as directed on the instructions, I let the oil soak into my skin after the bath and didn’t even apply additional moisturizer to my body afterwards (which is basically going against my religion).  The thing I immediately noticed after my 30 minute soak was that the massive, swollen mosquito bites I had gotten while playing outside with my daughter that evening were completely gone.  I mean, GONE.  I couldn’t find them at all!  The next day I noticed that my skin felt smoother than normal, wasn’t dry at all (even with skipping post-bath moisturizer), and my Keratosis Pilaris (those little bumpy “chicken skin” patches on the backs of my arms) was less pronounced.  My daughter inherited this charming skin ailment from me, so I am anxious to get more of the Powder Bath to see if it helps clear hers up too!

I’m an immediate convert and am ready to try all their products, now!  I especially want to try their shampoo and see if it helps my husband’s dry, flaky scalp, which I’m convinced isn’t dandruff but some form of psoriasis since nothing has worked for him except for a $50 bottle of prescription shampoo, which contains ingredients that probably altered his DNA.  Stay tuned for the results.

As the weather gets colder and it turns to Bath Season, I encourage you to stock up on some of this miracle bath soak and see if you experience such amazing results after just one use!
