Worker B Treatment Stick

Posted by:  Jordan

Ok, so now that Spring weather is officially in our future (73 degrees this week in NYC!?!  Where’s my glass of sparkling rose to celebrate?! ), this might not be the best timing for a recommendation for a winter skin savior, but no matter.  A savior is a savior no matter what time of year, right?

My two favorite skin saviors that got my whole family through this winter (and will continue to be used daily in our house) were the Beret Jane Miracle Salve, as I previously raved about in December.  The other mega-healing, skin-softening item we relied on is the Treatment Stick from Worker B.  This is absolutely my favorite lip balm of all time (and I’ve tried close to 1,000 I’d guess!).

Worker B Treatment-Stick

So creamy and moisturizing, and I love the oversized tube that feels like it really moisturizes my lips and the wrinkle-prone skin around it.  I use it every night before bed and every morning after brushing my teeth. My 4 year old daughter loves it too, and it’s so healing on her lips and nose that were constantly chapped all winter. Not only to be used as a lip balm, it can be used on dry patches anywhere on your body.

It’s rare that I would ever buy the same lip balm again because of my love to constantly try new things but this one will definitely be a staple in our medicine cabinet forever.  I’m a fan for life–thanks Worker B!

PJR Outing: Jane Iredale “Magic Hour” Launch + Giveaway!

Posted by:  Jordan

Jane Iredale The Golden Hour collection

Last week Emily and I had a fun night out when we attended the launch of Jane Iredale’s new Spring makeup collection honoring their 20th anniversary, the Magic Hour, which refers to the golden  hour of light just before sunset.  Think warm, shimmery colors–just what you’re craving this time of year!  The event was a garden party theme, complete with lawn games, makeovers, Spring-y hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, and beautiful flowers and glowy candlelight everywhere.

Jane Iredale Magic Hour event

The new collection, available in early March, is out-of-this-world stunning.  I’m honestly in love with all of the products, but the new Jelly Jar inky gel eyeliners really stand out as something special.  They’re completely natural and even STAY PUT on my lids, which is something I’ve been searching for in a liner for a long time.  The new angle eyeliner brush makes applying the nearly waterproof gel eyeliners a breeze.  The In Touch cream-to-powder highlighter in the beautiful new golden coral color known as Comfort is gorgeous on cheekbones and just under the eyebrows–it’s glowy rather than glittery, so you won’t look like a disco ball by using it.  Plus, it smells faintly of honeysuckle.  Unexpectedly, I’m really digging the new Lip Fixation stain & gloss.  I didn’t think I’d be such a fan of this product, as I’m usually turned off by the moisture-sucking texture of lip stains (it usually reminds me of applying pretzel dust to my lips).  And, I really can’t stand sparkles in my lip gloss.  Combine the two, and I just didn’t expect to like these lip products one bit.  But, to my surprise, I’m using them every day and loving how they look and feel!  The stains stay put but don’t make my lips feel dry.  The gloss is on the tackier side of glosses, but doesn’t feel gluey.  It just feels like the gloss is going to stay on longer than if it were the watery feel that some glosses have.  The two new stain colors are gorgeous: Compulsion is a pretty berryish mauve and Craze is a perky, bright coral.  I like to mix the two stains together to create a coral-y berry color.  Sounds ugly, but unless my bathroom lighting is really off, I think it looks nice.  Correct me if the next time you see me and my coral-berry stained lips look totally unflattering.  I haven’t used the eyeshadows much yet but here’s what Emily had to say about them:  “Appropriately named Golden Girl, these are the most classic, classy eye shades, ever. I often avoid eye compacts or palettes because they always include some juvenile blue or green I have no use for, but these three shades are mature without being the least bit boring. They are rich and lush and flattering on everyone I can possibly imagine using them. If you’re hesitant about eye shadows, this would be a great starter set. If you’re already a big eye shadow user, this will be your new go-to.”

Here are some (surprisingly entertaining) video tutorials on how to use the new collection to achieve three different looks:

MakeUp SmackDown: All Natural Cream Foundations

Posted by:  Jordan

A reader asked us to do a SmackDown version for affordable all-natural cream foundations, a product she was searching for to replace her expensive department store brand.  Thanks to several suggestions from other readers of which brands to test out, here are my findings from this version of MakeUp SmackDown!

The contenders:

Vegan Liquid Foundation from The All Natural Face

The All Natural Face Liquid Foundation

Health Glow Foundation by Real Purity (an Indiana company–Hoosier shout out from an Indiana native!!)

Real Purity Health Glow Foundation

Creme Foundation by Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques

Lauren Brooke Creme Foundation

Ease of choosing my color when purchasing online:

I put this category first because a lot of people feel uneasy buying cosmetics online without trying them in person first, which is a fair concern.  Finding your foundation color is difficult in person, let alone doing it all by yourself in front of a computer.

Lauren Brooke was super simple because they offer samples of all their products for $1.40 (I did try a sample of a serum for $3.50, but all the other samples are only $1.40).  Plus, they offer free shipping if you spend over $25 so it’s easy to order lots of samples of cosmetics and not have to pay additional for shipping.  I ordered two foundation samples and found that Warm #2 worked best for me, which surprised me because I would have thought I would have been Neutral rather than Warm.  There were several colors to choose from, but not an overwhelming amount.

The All Natural Face sells 51 shades of foundation (and if you find that none of those work for you, they’ll work with you to create a custom blend)!!!  With that many choices, they thankfully also sell a sampler kit of all the powder foundations in your range (pale/ medium or medium/dark) for only $4.60.  My trouble was there were SO MANY colors to choose from in the kit that I was a bit overwhelmed.  I made Emily help me narrow down the colors to a handful of potentials and then I went home and applied them to my whole face.  After much debating and second guessing, I found that Tan Warm was the best color for me (which is odd because I would consider my skin neither warm nor tan). After choosing a color from the powder foundations you can order liquid foundations, powder foundations, or concealer all in the same color.

Real Purity also sells samples for $1.50, but their free shipping promo is after you spend $50 so that makes it a little more difficult to load up on samples without paying shipping (am I the only person who tries anything to avoid paying shipping?  I hate it when you spend $5 on something and then pay $9 in shipping!).  However, finding your shade isn’t too difficult because they have 13 colors to choose from and accurate descriptions of the colors/undertones on their website.  I found that Soft Beige blended beautifully on my skin (described as “Fair skin with a slight pink undertone, cool skin tone”–which very much describes my skin, much more so than “Tan Warm” from The All Natural Face!).

Winner: I thought Lauren Brooke made it easiest to find my perfect shade with cheap sample prices and free shipping over $25, but really all of these companies make it pretty simple to choose your perfect color.

Coverage:

Spoiler–I really like all of these liquid foundations and they all offer nice coverage but in varying degrees.

The sheerest coverage was from The All Natural Face.  I found it to be just a notch more than a tinted moisturizer, in my opinion.  If you’re looking for a more full-coverage foundation, this one probably isn’t the best.  If you prefer a lighter coverage, I think this is an amazing choice.  I found that it leaves a pretty sheen on my face, almost like a built-in highlighter, but in a very subtle way.

Real Purity offers fantastic coverage which feels lightweight when you apply it, but just evens everything out and makes your skin look prettier.  I’d say it’s a middle of the road coverage foundation.  Great for everyday and blends beautifully!

Lauren Brooke is definitely more full-coverage–ideal for a big evening out when you’re getting glammed up with a full face of dramatic makeup, or for someone who has a lot of acne or skin discolorations they need to even out.  The cream was thick in my hands, but felt moisturizing and light on your face–not at all heavy.  I found it really covers imperfections nicely, as I have a few dark sun spots on my face that the foundation covered entirely, without even having to use concealer on top, like I normally do.  It made my skin look healthy, glowy (not greasy) and was a great base for the rest of my makeup.  I loved this foundation for a special evening, date night, or an interview, but for this stay-at-home-mom it was something I’d probably only use a handful of times in a year.  That’s not to say it’s not someone else’s ideal foundation because it does have amazing coverage and feels luxurious on your skin.  For me, however, I prefer something slightly more sheer for everyday.

Winner (for my skin’s coverage needs): Real Purity Health Glow Foundation (health glow is such an appropriate name for it…it really does make my skin look healthier and glowier!)  Followed very closely by Lauren Brooke.

Price:

The All Natural Face costs $13.80 for a 1 oz bottle.  However, you pretty much have to first buy the sampler kit of foundation colors because there’s absolutely no way you could choose your color without doing that step first.  So tack on an initial $4.60 to spend on finding your right color.

Real Purity costs $26 for a 1.5oz bottle.

Lauren Brooke costs $27 for a 24 gram pot (a little over 3/4 oz).  A little will go a long way with this foundation, however.

Packaging:

This is no way to choose your best foundation, but if you’re someone who likes to display pretty bottles and jars in your bathroom, Lauren Brooke is the only one of these three that spends any money or thought in their packaging.  It looks like something you’d buy at a department store, whereas the other two look like a high school intern might have designed their packaging.  Again, this doesn’t affect my decision in any way regarding the product, but I thought it should be mentioned!

To sum up this SmackDown, I really love the liquid foundations from all of three of these companies, but I’d reorder the foundation from Real Purity and then invest in the AMAZING concealer that I sampled from Lauren Brooke to even out under eye circles and imperfections or discolorations.  I feel that a more sheer-medium coverage foundation combined with a heavy-duty, super blendable concealer is my best combo.  You really can’t go wrong with any of these foundations.  Choose your coverage level, and I think you’ll be happy with any of these choices.

Addendum:

In sampling these foundations I of course had to sample some other types of makeup from these companies.  Here are the highlights (and one fail):

-As mentioned, the creme concealer from Lauren Brooke is out of this world!  It’s $14 for 1/2 oz, which I feel is a great price.

Laruen Brooke Lip Gloss-The Botanical Lip Gloss in Coral from Lauren Brooke.  It ended up being more of a red than coral but so pretty with buildable color.  Loved the saturated color combined with the sheer moisturizing gloss.

The Vegan Oily Lid Eyeshadow Primer in Buff from The All Natural Face is now a part of my daily routine.  It actually allows me to have color on my eyes all day, which I’ve complained about before how by the middle of the day all the eye color I applied that morning had disappeared.  No longer the case, thanks to this incredibly effective yet insanely inexpensive product.  Only $3.45 for a little pot that should last me at least a year of daily application.

Mascara from the All natural Face in Black.  At first I wasn’t impressed with this mascara.  It took 3 coats just to give my lashes a little bit of emphasis.  However, after wearing it all day and even testing it through a sweaty class at the gym, it stayed put with no signs of smudging.  After trying it over my favorite Jane Iredale Purelash primer, it was a great mascara.  The primer made the mascara have more oomph and defined my lashes much more.

Mascara from Real Purity in Violet.  This is not at all something I’d think to pick for myself, but I was sent a sample of their new colored mascaras (available in violet, navy, and emerald green) and was pleasantly surprised!  The mascara itself is a buildable formula–I found it took me 3 coats to get to the level of definition I like for my lashes.  But it stayed put all day (especially when applied over the Jane Iredale primer).  But the violet color was so fun!  I wore it over to a playdate at Emily’s house and I received positive feedback. “I could tell that you had color on your eyes but I didn’t realize it was in your mascara”, said one of the moms.  And Emily raved how she didn’t know I was wearing colored mascara until I was sitting in front of her window and the light happened to catch it.  A fun addition to your natural makeup collection, for sure!

Real Purity powder blushPowder blush in Parfait from Real Purity. The bright pink isn’t something I’d normally be drawn to, but it turns out it really brightened up my face with a flattering pink.  Would be interested in trying out the Light Coral or the Shrimp colors as well!

-The Eye & Throat Cream from Real Purity is the best eye cream I’ve ever tried.  I am often asked what natural eye cream I recommend and it’s always a hard question for me because I’ve never found a product that I loved as much as this.  I’ve always felt that eye cream felt very much like a face cream in a smaller bottle–until I discovered this!  It’s so light and has almost a creamy-gel texture that the skin absorbs quickly.  This will be my new daily eye cream!  I only received a sample size of this so I can’t attest to the long-term eye cream benefits yet, but I will be ordering a full size and plan to use it twice a day, so I will report back!

And one fail:

Eyeliner Pencil in Blue from Lauren Brooke.  The color of the eyeliner was beautiful, a jewel-toned navy that was nice for every day.  However, the pencil was too soft and oily so I found that I had to sharpen it every time and it would often break during application, making me have to sharpen it again.  It was $13.50, which I thought was on the expensive side, especially for how little time it will last me since I have to re-sharpen it constantly.

BRAND new (to us!) Vol. 2: W3LL PEOPLE

Posted by: Emily

w3ll-vignette

This really shouldn’t matter, but here’s one thing I really like about W3LL PEOPLE (in addition to the totally cool “3” in their name and their excellent products!). You can go into a fancy store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, Henri Bendel, and buy it. Like a real luxury brand. I know, I know. It’s silly. This isn’t Breakfast at Tiffany’s, I’m not Paris Hilton (thank goodness), and my idea of a spa experience these days is going to the dentist sans 2-year-old and reading US Weekly in the waiting room for 5 minutes. And I couldn’t be more grateful for my life.

But every so often, a girl (or guy, or woman, or person) just wants to go into a fancy store and find something special. I’ve missed that since I went completely green with my cosmetics. Before I did, and before my daughter was born, I used to love going to the basement level of Bergdorf’s or the first floor of Saks and just wandering through all the cosmetics. Occasionally I’d buy a Kiehl’s lotion or a Tarte lipgloss, but that wasn’t even the point. I just liked being there and looking at all the things I could buy, if I, say, won the lottery or saved up.

But going green, though one of the best, most rewarding decisions I’ve made in most ways, means that going through a department store’s makeup section is just a depressing look at fun colors, smells, and textures that I can’t have. I don’t want all the chemicals, but I love the pretty, the feeling of luxury, and I miss that.

So imagine my surprise a few months ago, on a rare Manhattan afternoon when I had an extra 10 minutes to myself, that there, in historic, romantic Bendel’s, was A NATURAL COSMETIC BRAND! And not just any brand, but W3LL PEOPLE, one I truly, absolutely, genuinely love.

ExtraordinaryBerry

Their slogan is “Hippie Tested, Diva Approved”

Let’s put aside the fact that it’s sold in Bendel’s, because, hey, most of us don’t live in Manhattan or have the time to wander in luxury, so let’s just take that awesomeness out of the equation for a second. Okay. I STILL REALLY LOVE W3LL PEOPLE! It’s still in my top 5 of favorite brands, ever.

Here’s my favorite of all their products: The Universalist Luminous Multi-use Colorstick. It is my new favorite lipstick. It lasts for so long– through eating, drinking, kissing, etc. Incredible staying power, and fantastic color options.

univ1

A while back, I ordered samples from W3LL PEOPLE’s website. (I love that, like Alima Pure, you can order samples of the products for $1.50 each!) I ordered all the colors of the Universalist. When my order arrived, though, my sample of #3 was missing. I was particularly sad about this, because it looked online like it might be a perfect color for me, a dark bronze. So I contacted customer service, mentioned the missing sample, and this blog, and they sent me a complimentary full-size #3 to review! How amazing is that?! Fantastic products + Amazing customer service!

Universalist #3 Bronze

I love it, friends. I use it mostly as a lip stick, but it also makes a great blush.  It’s second only to my other favorite Universalist Luminous Multi-use color stick in #4, Bronzed Rose. Wow. I mean, seriously. An amazing color. The color I’ve been looking for forever. This truly replaces my NARS multiples that I’ve missed so much.

Universalist #4 Bronzed Rose

As usual when I fall in love with a brand, I could write a 17-page blog post/love letter about it and tell you 100 things I love about it, but I know this is the digital age and you’re all very busy tweeting and stuff, so I’ll keep this brief.  You can read all about W3LL PEOPLE’s fantastic history, ingredients, and how they’ve been featured in/by W Magazine, Daily Candy, Refinery 29, and other cool sources. You can check out their website and read user-reviews about them on spiritbeautylounge.com.

Basically, I want this to serve as an introduction. I feel like I’m fixing you up with your soulmate. Reader, meet W3LL PEOPLE. W3LL PEOPLE, meet Reader. I know you’re going to hit it off, fall in love, and ride off into the sunset together. I can’t wait to dance at your proverbial commitment ceremony and hold your metaphorical children.

So go forth, Reader. Look around W3LL PEOPLE’s website. Read reviews. Order Samples!!!! Fall in Love.

Be Prepared for Summer with Jane Iredale (Giveaway!)

Here in New York we’ve been hit with an intense heat wave already this summer.  So, being the super generous and timely people that they are, jane iredale has put together a really great giveaway for our readers consisting of a beach-ready cosmetic case filled with all the SPF, bronzing and hydrating essentials needed to enjoy warm summer days, whether you are hitting the beach or just faking a golden glow at the office. The set includes:

  •  Tantasia (two deluxe samples), a 2-in-1 self tanner and bronzer
  •  Powder-Me SPF (deluxe sample, in Translucent), a dry mineral sunscreen for face and body
  •  LipDrink SPF 15  (deluxe sample), a quenching fruit-infused protective balm for lips
  •  POMMIST Hydration Spray (full size), a refreshing spritz with UV-protective pomegranate that sets makeup and soothes inflammation
  •  A jane iredale  clear cosmetic case, perfect for traveling and packing into a beach bag

Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF TranslucentAll of these products are suitable for every skin type and tone (even the translucent Powder-Me SPF works for dark skin tones).  I’ve been using the Powder-Me SPF in Translucent for a couple months now and really enjoy the flexibility of dusting a little SPF protection after applying my makeup.  It’s also great for stashing in your bag and quickly touching up any areas that are prone to getting too much sun, despite my diligent sunscreening (for me that’s my chest and nose).

We’ve yet to try the LipDrink SPF 15 balm, but on a side note, Emily has been using another Jane Iredale lip product that she Jane Iredale PureGloss Sangria is enjoying (not included in the giveaway).  She  previously reviewed her first Jane Iredale lip gloss here, and since then, got her wish to try one of their shimmery PureGlosses since the nice people at Jane Iredale sent her one to test out!  Says Emily, “Well, my friends, it lives up to my hopes! Shiny, sticky (in the good way), and yes, shimmery, Jane Iredale’s Sangria has made the cut as one of the few lip products I keep in my purse (currently sharing that honor with Alima Pure’s Nourishing LipBalm in Fig and W3LL PEOPLE’s Universalist #4, which I will be writing a lot more about soon!).  When you really want that old-school gloss feeling, PureGloss is a great option.  Like all glosses, it doesn’t last long, but you get the joy of reapplying, where you get to smell the scent all over again and feel refreshed and new.”

Jane Iredale POMMISST

I haven’t tried the Pommist Hydration Spray yet either, but it sounds so lovely that I want to pour it in a summer cocktail!  I’m currently using a rosewater mist for lots of uses: to set my makeup, use as a toner, and as a refreshing spritz in the afternoon.  But the added UV protection of Pommist sounds perfect for this weather.

Leave a comment below to enter this generous, summery giveaway.  Bonus entries for following Jane Iredale @janeiredale on Twitter and Instagram, as well as Facebook.com/janeiredale.  Just let us know in the comments what bonus entries you’re eligible for so we can give you extra entries.  This contest is open to US shipping addresses only and will end on Monday, 7/22/13 at midnight EST.

Back to the title of this post: Lipgloss is indeed the “gateway product” for many people trying to go green in their beauty routine. It’s the first thing that Jordan and I tried when we began this chemical-free, organic journey. It started  years and years ago, when I read something about how women eat an enormous amount of lipstick in a lifetime. So when I saw a new gloss containing “vitamins,” I bought it for Jordan. Soon we realized that it wasn’t just about an opportunity to consume an admittedly tiny amount of extra vitamins; here was a chance to eliminate toxins, parabens, and, especially lead, from the makeup product we “eat” the most of. Of course, we know now that all make up and beauty products are absorbed through your skin as if you were eating them, but we started small. And here we are, 4 Earth Days later, giving away 7 fantastic lip glosses FOR FREE!

Must-Have for Spring: Jane Iredale’s Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain

Posted by:  Jordan

Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain

Obviously the huge perk of writing this blog is the chance to review new natural  beauty products.  But when we get to do that without buying the product, that’s enough to make me and Emily light-headed!  Now, sometimes companies send us items to sample that are good…and just that.  So it’s hard to go gaga all over them or have much to say at all, really.  This is NOT one of those items.

The Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain by Jane Iredale is my newest “must-never-be-without-it-again, EVER” product.  As soon as I received it I couldn’t wait to tear it open and try it out to see how the self-adjusting pink would look on my skin.  On me it’s a bright, happy strawberry-ish pink.  On Emily, it adjusted to her undertones to reveal a slightly darker pink.  We both fell immediately in love with our personalized colors!  Pink is such a cheery color for any time of year, but especially welcome as we start to anticipate Spring.

Unlike most lip stains this one won’t dry out your lips at all.  In fact, it’s super moisturizing and, since it’s a stain, very long-lasting.  I had one question with one of the ingredients in the list, Red 21,  so I emailed their customer service reps who responded immediately with a very informative, helpful reply:

The ingredient you are referring to, I believe, is the Red 21 (CI45380). Red 21 is a bromine salt that contains no petroleum derivatives and no heavy metals.  Free bromine does not occur in nature, but occurs as colorless soluble crystalline mineral salts, analogous to table salt.  It is free of all 27 allergens listed by the European Union and is approved in every country in the world.  It has passed all safety tests.  It is activated by the lips’ natural PH (acid balance) to create a unique shade of pink, that will vary with each user’s personal body chemistry and it is gluten free.

I recently returned from our annual trip to Puerto Rico and I used this dual-purpose stain every day, along with my Eminence tinted moisturizer, and some mascara.  It was all I needed to look put together for the day and it took less than 5 minutes to do my makeup each morning.  Clearly, a product that’s pretty, natural, and shortens my makeup routine deserves a permanent place in my cosmetic bag.  Now I just think I need another for my handbag!

Thank you to Jane Iredale for sending us this amazing product to test out.  We’re forever fans!  Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain can be purchased on Beauty.com for $25.  Full ingredient list:

Triisostearyl Citrate, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Oil, Beeswax, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract, Rubus Fruticosus (Blackberry) Fruit Extract, Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Rosa Damascena Flower Wax, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Citric Acid. May Contain: Red 21 (CI 45380) (Aka 223)
