Splurge on Yourself in the New Year: Splurge Skincare Review PLUS a Giveaway!

Posted by:  Jordan

Happy 2013, friends!!  I can’t think of a better way to ring in the new year than by introducing a favorite new natural skincare line.  Wait, yes I can–a GIVEAWAY!!!!  But first, let me gush about these crazy good products.

Splurge was started in 2010 by two friends in Massachusetts who began making their awesome scrubs for their friends for Christmas gifts.  They were so loved that the hobby turned into a business which now sells three incredible products: the scrubs, lip balms, and their new tinted lip balms.

Splurge Skincare The Rub The scrubs currently come in 4 scents: almond, peppermint, lemon, and Autumn.  Winter will be released soon and if it smells as heavenly as the other four scents, I know it will be a hit.  My personal favorite is the Autumn, which is spicy, sweet (but not too sweet), and warming on your skin.  It has essential oils of orange, clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg and I assure you it’s a delightful treat year-round!  Emily’s favorite scent is lemon…or peppermint (it’s too hard to decide!).  These scrubs are really a special treat–a splurge, I suppose at $26 each, but such a worthwhile splurge.  Emily and I agree that they are quite possibly the best body scrubs we’ve ever tried.  If ever there were a time to splurge on a quality gift for yourself, the new year is it.

Splurge Lip Buttah The next product is not a splurge, it’s a necessity.  The Lip Buttahs are hands down the BEST, most moisturizing lip balms we’ve ever tried (and we’ve tried a lot!).  The balms are $7 each and I think I would pay more because they’re that incredible.  They are available in four scents as well: Peppermint, Almond, Lemon, and Orange Chocolate.  It doesn’t matter which scent you choose, they’re all equally soothing on your dry, winter lips.  I also appreciate the shape of the tubes which are oval rather than round, which I think covers more surface area of our lips, so you only need one swipe on each lip.  Emily and I seriously can’t get enough of these superb balms.

Splurge Tinted Lip ButtahNow, on to the fun news–the giveaway!!!  Splurge just recently launched their new tinted Lip Buttahs and we get to give away a set to one lucky reader.  The tinted balms are just as moisturizing as the traditional Lip Buttahs, but with just a slight hint of color (so don’t be afraid if you’re applying it without a mirror–you won’t look like a clown if you go out of the lines!).  The colors are available in three sheer shades: In Love (a soft pink), Fling (a sheer red), and Going Steady (an earthy nude).  Want to try out these incredible lip balms for yourself?  All you have to do is leave a comment below!  For bonus entries, “like” Splurge’s Facebook page and/or follow their Twitter feed (just tell us in the comments what you did and we’ll add those entries for you).  The contest will end a week from today on Tuesday, 1/8/13 at midnight EST.  The winner will receive a set of the new Tinted Lip Buttahs (one of each color) and will be announced on Wednesday morning, 1/9.  Good luck and a happy, healthy new year to everyone!

So Thankful

Posted by: Jordan

You may have noticed a lull in posting on my part recently. There’s also been a severe lull in sleeping in our household for the past 3 weeks. But the reason for both is an excellent one since we welcomed our daughter–and the newest product junkie–to our family! Harlyn Annabelle was born on October 30th and our lives have been forever changed. I am beyond thankful that we get to be her parents.

Our precious girl loves her Weleda Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash during bath time

Other things I’m grateful for this Thanksgiving:

doTerra lavender essential oil – My cousin gave me this pure essential oil–along with a bottle of fractionated coconut oil–as a baby gift. She advised me of all the ways the lavender oil can benefit baby (1-2 drops of essential oil per 2 tablespoons of fractionated coconut oil to dilute it for use on a baby; no need to dilute for adults). This oil alleviates fussiness, skin rashes, fever, earache, and most importantly for us recently, diaper rash. Our little girl already had her first case of diaper rash and after only a few days of using the diluted lavender oil on her sensitive skin, it has cleared up! She also loves when I use a little bit as a massage oil during an infant massage. I love the lavender oil rubbed on my temples and back of my neck when I have a headache–my tension headache immediately goes away (crying babies have a way with giving someone a tension headache from time to time!)

Tinted lip balm from Naked Eye Beauty – Emily and I received a sample of this amazing tinted lip balm from the line’s creator, Jen, last week. All week I’ve kept the balm on my bathroom sink and look forward to putting it on my lips. It is far and away the best tinted balm I’ve ever tried (sorry, Burt’s Bees, this blows you out of the water!) The rosy pinkish-red color is perfection–it brightens my face without screaming, “I just applied lipstick in order to make myself look less sleep deprived”. The consistency and smoothness make you want to constantly reapply it, even though the color miraculously lasts a surprisingly long time for a tinted balm. And my favorite part, other than the universally flattering color, is the scent. Jen uses rose and passionfruit flavoring and it’s reminiscent of a scent used in the lobby of a super-luxe tropical resort. Though the price isn’t super-luxe; only $6 for this little bit of happiness. Better yet, for the months of November and December all products in the Naked Eye Beauty line are 15% off by using code NEB15OFF. I want to try everything from this vegan all-natural skincare line, sold exclusively on Etsy. Guaranteed, I’ll be stocking up on these lip balms so I’m never without them ever again (also available in a coral color, which I’ve yet to try, but will definitely be ordering soon!). The lip balm doubles as a cream blush, which works great as a multi-tasker–essential in a new-mom makeup arsenal! Update: I ordered the coral color and I love it just as much as the rose!!! It’s equally flattering as the rose color but just a little less bright, more toned down. Love both of them!

Hope everyone has a happy, healthy, and blessed Thanksgiving!

Vapour Organic Beauty Giveaway!! Siren Lipstick!

Posted by: Emily

As many of you know, we here at PJR are huge fans of Vapour Organic Beauty and we were thrilled when they were featured on The Today Show recently and offered several promotional kits for only $18! So, of course, I ordered one 🙂

Two days after the Today Show appearance, I got my Drama Queen set in the mail from Vapour. [This is kind of irrelevant, but I have to give them major props for how fast it arrived, given how inundated they must have been from all the orders from the Today Show appearance. We heart you, Vapour!]

Anyway, more importantly, I LOVE the Siren Lipstick I got in this kit. The color, Knockout, is incredible. I have been wanting to try a new lip color from Vapour, and just wasn’t motivated because, as much as I love Vapour, I do sometimes wish I could try out the products in a conveniently located store near me, and this kept me from taking the ordering plunge. Luckily, the Today Show $18 kits broke me out of this funk! And Knockout is the exact color I was looking for, even if I didn’t know it’s what I needed. I love when that happens! It’s deep red, but sheer and equally easy to wear with no other makeup on or with a full face. And it is so moisturizing!

However, after falling madly in love with Knockout, I discovered that the shade has been discontinued! I was so sad! So I wrote to our good friends at Vapour– they have the best customer service, ever– and they replied with great news! They have just launched 10 new shades, for a total of 16 Siren Lipstick shades in all, and they sent us some to try out! The best part is that they were able to help me find a wonderful replacement for Knockout! Torrid (#413) is very similar, almost identical, and the new formula is absolutely wonderful– the shades last even longer and are just as moisturizing– amazing!

Want to hear some even better news? The nice, generous, awesome folks at Vapour have offered to give one of you, our lucky readers, 3 shades of your choice of Siren Lipstick in a giveaway! We’ll choose the winner from this post and she will get to choose the shades of Siren Lipstick she will receive! Jordan and I are busy trying them all out now, and I can tell you, they are all winners!!

Post below and tell us which shades you’d love to try! We’ll pick the winner at random after noon on Wednesday, May 18. You can also post on our Facebook page for an additional chance to enter!

Have/Love/Want Volume 5

Posted by: Emily

I wish this product could be in the “Love” category, but the thing that is really keeping it squarely in the “Have” is its scent. The product in question is Revolution Organics’ All-Over Skin Cream. There are certainly a lot of things I do absolutely love about it– its organic ingredients, the fact that it works really well, it has a great texture, that I got a good deal on it (this bargain is still going on!), etc.

The thing holding me back is a smell I just can’t quite describe. It’s not terrible, and in fact, I bet a lot of you out there won’t even mind it. It’s not bad. I just don’t love it. I don’t know how to begin to describe it, so I will just have to encourage you to try this cream out if you’re at all curious. (And I must also give the disclaimer here that I am normally sensitive to scents– see my post about the importance of lip gloss smells!– and that pregnancy has made me about 100 times more sensitive, so it’s entirely possible this smell is an issue only for me, and only for now.)

It’s a little lighter  in texture than Weleda’s Skin Food, but thicker and much more moisturizing than a lot of other disappointing creams I’ve tried. This is a nice frequent-use texture. I keep it near my bathroom sink to moisturize my hands after washing, which I do about a million times a day.

I have NO idea what took me so long to try Weleda Everon Lip Balm. Seriously– I have been looking for a good lip balm forever, and so why did I only just now try this one out? I guess I thought it would be expensive or something, but IT’S ONLY $5.50!!! Which is amazing for an all-natural, top-quality lip balm.

Speaking of scents, this one has a really interesting scent I really like– it has notes of Vanilla and Rose, a combo I would never have thought I’d like, but I really do!

And with Jojoba Seed Oil, Shea Butter, and Beeswax, this balm really works. I just totally love it. Another win for Weleda. How do they do it? I love everything they make!

Usually, when writing this column, the “Want” portion is the easiest, because there are always things I want to try. Or, in a way, it’s the hardest because there are so many “Want” things to choose from. Tonight I was having trouble thinking of something I’m really desiring, which is nice, in a way– I’m  pretty content lady at the moment!

But one thing kept popping into my mind, and it’s something I’ve tried before– usually the “Want” is something totally new I’ve never used– but this time I keep thinking back to a review/giveaway we did almost a year ago. The company is Living Tree Botanicals, and everything they sent us to try was incredible, but I just cannot stop thinking about their Shea Rosehip Body Butter, even a year later. It was just amazing. So unique.

I wanted to take this opportunity to give a shout-out to this wonderful, artisanal company from upstate NY. Read our review here, and check out their new Etsy store. They’re only selling 2 products at the moment there… hope that’s not a bad sign– I love this company. I even went so far as to call them “the next Weleda” in our review last year; incredibly high praise! I really want to start using this body butter again. It’s really wonderful. I hope you’ll try it, too– I know you’ll love it!

Lipstick for the Lazy

Posted by:  Jordan

Maybe I’m just getting a lot lazier as I age, but applying lipstick several times a day is just too much work for me.  It’s more of a special occasion thing for me.  I wish I were the type of woman who always looked impeccably put together, wearing heels and lipstick on a regular basis.  Maybe in my early 20’s I was ambitious enough to be like that, but these days I’m definitely more of a flats and lip balm type of woman.  I am, however, addicted to feeling something moisturizing and creamy on my lips, so I always carry around a lip balm (for as long as I can remember I’ve been doing this, even back in my teenage Bonne Belle days).  In the past year I’ve tried to make an effort to increase my put-togetherness by using a tinted lip balm.  It’s easy to apply, just like a regular lip balm, but gives your face just a touch of color.  So I call it lipstick for lazy people.  The first two natural tinted balms I tried from The Savannah Bee Company (read my reviews of those here and here) were a daily indulgence that I kept at my desk and reapplied about 20 times a day.  Unfortunately, The Savannah Bee Company changed their formulas and the Lip Tints are now shimmery.  I’m sure they’re just as lovely of a product, but I personally just have an aversion to shimmery lips so I was on the search for a new tinted balm.  And wouldn’t you guess, I just ran out of my two tubes of Blackberry and Peach tinted balms.  I was starting to feel panicky and I needed a replacement balm (or two) to keep near my body at all times.

Thankfully Jean Godfrey-June, beauty editor at Lucky Magazine, came to my rescue!  Her latest column from the March 2011 issue  features Burt’s Bees new 100% natural Tinted Lip Balm!  It’s like she was reading my mind.  Also, I really need to have a word with this woman, because she has such a knack for making me immediately want to buy whatever her latest beauty product obsession might be that month.  So of course, I made a point of going directly out and finding a replacement to my old tinted balm.  It seems that lots of other New York women were thinking the same thing because I went to five stores yesterday in Manhattan and Brooklyn before I finally found a store that had them in stock (if you live in Brooklyn, they have a brand new shipment at Park Natural Foods on Court Street in Cobble Hill.)  After the thrill of the hunt was finally over, I had a new thrill–choosing which of the six colors I was going to buy!  I tested all six colors on my hand, and I had a tough time deciding between Rose and Tiger Lilly.  I ended up with Rose, but at $6.49, I might have to go back and buy a tube of Tiger Lilly too!  The texture is perfection–smooth and creamy–and the color is a very sheer, warm, dark pink.  The scent (since I know this is an extremely important factor in any lip product for Emily) is subtly sweet– barely detectable, in fact.

I should mention that in the reviews on Burt’s Bees’ website, one of the customers was upset that they use Carmine as the dying agent in some of the pink and red colors.  Carmine, if you’re not aware, is a natural food and cosmetic dye made from carminic acid–which is produced from boiling scaled insects (like beetles) to get a natural red dye.  This doesn’t bother me at all–it’s not like I’m eating the insects.  But, for the ultra squeamish or strict vegans, it should be noted.  I’m actually more upset at Campari, the Italian bitter liquor, that replaced the carmine in their signature red liquor with an artificial color!!!  Now I can’t drink delicious Campari and Grapefruit cocktails, and this is WAY more upsetting to me than drinking a dye made from a beetle.  If anyone, as a side topic, would like to recommend an all-natural alternative to the new non-natural Campari, I’d be forever grateful.

Vapour Organic Beauty: Find Your Perfect Shade!

Posted by:  Jordan

Vapour has added a fantastic new service (and if you remember reading earlier, Emily raves about their customer service), so this just adds the (all-natural) cherry on top of the ice cream sundae known as Vapour. They are now offering a free consulting service to ensure you find the absolute best shade of foundation and concealer for your skin.  Here’s how it works:
Gain instant access to Vapour’s beauty team by sending an email to info@vapourbeauty.comRespond to the following questions and attach a photo, and Vapour’s experts will evaluate your information and photo to help determine which Vapour products are best for you!-   Where you fall in the shade chart (below)

–   What is your skin type (dry/oily/combination)?

–   What is the climate like where you live (dry, humid, temperate, etc.)?

–   How does the sun affect your skin when you don’t wear sunscreen (always burn, tan, burn-and-turn’)?

–   What is your current foundation brand and shade (i.e. MAC Cosmetics, NC30 etc)?

It’s really that simple–they’ll respond to your email with your personalized shade recommendation.  And as a special thank you for our devoted readers, Vapour is offering a generous gift with purchase throughout the month of Feb 2011: a free concealer in your personalized shade with any purchase!  All you have to do is mention Product Junkies Rehab blog in the email you send to the beauty team consultants.
Need help deciding what to purchase in order to get your free concealer?  As you know, Emily and I are huge fans of just about all of their products, but my latest favorite is the Aura Multi-Use Blush in “Spark” .  It’s the best shade I’ve ever found for my skin.  One of our readers, Maria, wrote in a couple months ago asking us for a recommendation on a great blush shade for fair skin.  Being extremely fair skinned it was hard for me to answer this question as it’s usually hard for me to wear blush since I unfortunately blush so easily naturally.  But this creamy blush adds just that little bit of peach warmth that isn’t too heavy and gives me just the perk I need in the dead of winter.  And since this is a multi-use product, you can also use it as a lipstick.  I particularly love it underneath my favorite Vapour Elixir Plumping Gloss shade, “Pout” (a beautiful nude shade, but like all plumping glosses I’ve tried, it honestly doesn’t really plump…but don’t let that deter you, the color alone is perfection!).  Pout is a necessity for that “smoldering eye/nude lip” look that all the models pull off effortlessy, but we mortals look a bit goth trying out.  Spark blush/lipstick combined with Pout gloss is great for this look, though, because it adds warmth instead of making you look like a beige corpse.  And it goes without saying that both of these products are 100% natural and at least 70% organic.
If you’re still dragging your feet on trying out Vapour, now is the time to jump on this offer, because the free concealer with purchase only applies for the month of February!  *Update: This offer has EXPIRED
